julie gross

Julie Gross received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute and her Master of Arts from Hunter College. In addition to drawing and painting, Gross teaches at Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology. She is a past recipient of the prestigious Pollack/Krasner Foundation Grant, National Endowment for the Arts Grant, and National Academy Museum EA Abbey Mural Painting Grant. Her work is held in the collections of AT&T, Lucent Technologies, Master Card, Pfizer, Prudential, and the Bellagio Hotel among many others. Her work has also been featured in numerous television shows and movies.

Gross sees herself as a choreographer of form and color. Her process begins with a compass, where she intuitively investigates different juxtapositions of circular shapes first in pencil and later in color with gouache on water color paper. She also works with flashe on mylar which offers a translucent effect. Gross is very interested in the tensions that develop between forms depending on their proximity and fullness. When she reaches a point where the work begins to pulse and dance, then she changes scale and moves to refine the work in oil on linen.

All at once, Gross’ work represents a clear, bold study in the classic concepts of symmetry and asymmetry, positive and negative space, scale and proportion, and color theory. The balance and harmony achieved amongst these different forces is masterful, exciting the intellect. Enticing the emotions are the seductive, rounded forms which squeeze, drip and flow. The feeling is that of liquids of varying viscosities vying for space and seeking equilibrium. But like an ink blot test, the eye and mind quickly move beyond the flowing forms and seek the recognizable. And never is one disappointed in this venture as amazingly one imagines persons, places, and things in abundance. How so much is achieved in such a restrained fashion is astonishing.
