clarence morgan

Clarence Morgan began his education at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA and received his Master of Fine Arts in Painting at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design also in Philadelphia.  He currently teaches and is department chair at the University of Minnesota, but is also actively involved in many other teaching institutions in varying capacities.  Morgan has written extensively and has participated in a dizzying array of residencies, workshops, panels, and special projects.  His work can be found in the collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art, American Express, IBM, General Mills, Mobil, Phillip Morris, Prudential, the New York Public Library, Hyatt, and countless other institutions.

Morgan uses mostly acrylic, ink, and pencil on several substrates including canvas and panel.  As one begins to recognize an orderly set of distinct layers in the work, this sense is confounded when one begins to question whether what appears to be above might actually be a window to that below.  This is the mastery and brilliance of the work, where what one perceives to be a solid may in fact be a void.  This interplay between positive and negative, light and dark, object and space is of great fascination in Morgan’s work.

Also, tantalizing are the simple abstract forms that in combination begin to hint at the recognizable.  Again, of great fascination is the fact that these assemblages seem both vaguely familiar and yet other worldly.  This feeling is enhanced by the rich even coloring that produces such a strong, graphic, two-dimensional quality while the overlapping and solid-void effect supplies a dimensional mystery and an hierarchal ambiguity.  One wonders about shadows and silhouettes, traces and disturbances, interactions and reactions, all of which contribute immensely to the work’s endless curiosity and intrigue.

commissioned & site specific works are available from each artist; please call the gallery for details.
