charlie goodwin

Goodwin first studied at the New Hampshire Institute for the Arts and later at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He was recently featured in Valley News as an “absorbing must-see” artist. He has exhibited in New Hampshire and Massachusetts and has generated tremendous excitement and curiosity with his mesmerizing work.

Wild cucumber grows vigorously in central New Hampshire where Goodwin lives. By late summer, its vines and small cucumber-like seed pods can overrun bushes and small trees. After the retreat of the following winter, desiccated vines and pods remain. The fleshy parts of the pods are gone, leaving a paper-thin envelope surrounding a delicate mesh skeleton, all housing a couple of seeds.

Inspired by these natural forms, Goodwin has been exploring multiple expressions of their unique energy. Over time, the pods have proliferated as the vines have faded. The pods have simplified into rounded outlines; circle marks. The circle marks have grown in number, jamming the surface, then overlapping one another, then piling on each other, thicker and thicker becoming ever more physical, the marks heavier, increasingly massive and insistent.

These works are about many things. They are very much about color. They are about complexity. They are about surface and physicality. They are about texture and mass. They are about finding emotion through experience. They are about paint and its numinous vocabulary. These works are visually captivating. They not only speak of the form and invasive growth pattern of the original subject, but also more fundamentally, of reproduction and decomposition in both the microcosm and macrocosm. In this way, Goodwin’s work is truly transcendent.
